What is a “Food Protection Manager” and how do I become one?

A Food Protection Manager or a Person in Charge is an individual who is responsible for the operation of a food establishment, including food preparation, packaging, storage and service.

They are also required to demonstrate a proficiency in required knowledge to the regulatory authority. This is usually achieved by passing an exam that is part of an ANAB-CFP accredited program.

What is the Userve Food Protection Manager Certification Exam?

The Userve Food Protection Manager Certification Exam is designed to assess your knowledge of food safety as specified in the latest version of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Food Code and in accordance with the criteria and standards established through the Conference for Food Protection (CFP).

Individuals who pass the exam have demonstrated the required level of competency and are awarded certification. You must pass the Food Protection Manager Certification Exam every five years (or within the time frame specified by state regulations) to maintain certification as a Food Protection Manager.

What are ANAB and CFP?

ANAB is the ANSI National Accreditation Board. It is a non-profit organization that oversees administration and coordination of standards and technical regulations in the U.S. ANAB provides a framework for fair standard development and represents the interests of more than 270,000 organizations and 30 million professionals worldwide.

The Conference for Food Protection (CFP) is a non-profit organization. The structure of the conference provides a representative and equitable partnership among regulators, industry, academia, professional organizations, and consumers to identify problems, formulate recommendations, and develop and implement practices that ensure food safety. The CFP meets at least biennially to provide that forum.

Requirements & Access

How long does the Food Manager Certification Program take?

The training takes most people a few hours to complete. The course length can vary from person to person based on previous experience, English language skills and computer literacy. Keep in mind that you can train at your own pace and start and stop as often as you like.

In addition, the Certification Exam has a time limit of 90 minutes.

How long will I have access to the Food Manager Certification Program?

You will get 12 months' access from the date of enrollment.

Are there any Food Manager Certification Program prerequisites?

Examination

What do I need to know before taking the Certification Exam?

There are a few things you need to be aware of before starting the exam. Please refer to this article to understand the workplace and environment setup requirements along with some Exam Dos and Don’ts.

What format is the Certification Exam?

The format of the final exam is multiple choice. Depending on the program option you choose, you have multiple attempts to pass the exam and you must score at least 70%. Re-attempts are not available immediately; there is a time delay of 24 hours between the first and second attempt and then 7 days between each subsequent attempt.

The Certification Exam is remotely proctored. What does that mean?

The Certification Exam is recorded and monitored by a proctor. A proctor is a person who remotely observes while you complete the exam. The proctor has the right to terminate the exam if you engage in or are suspected of engaging in any misconduct or cheating.

What is the accommodation process for candidates with special needs?

What is the Practice Exam?

The Practice Exam is a shorter version of the Certification Exam. It will allow you to familiarize yourself with our testing environment and assess your knowledge. You will be allowed unlimited access to the Practice Exam.

Certification Information

I have completed the Userve Food Protection Manager Certification Exam. How will I know if I passed and when will I get my certificate?

All exams are scored electronically by Userve so you will receive an unofficial exam result immediately after you finish and click submit. This will let you know if you have passed the exam.

After passing the exam, you will be able to request your certificate from within your Userve account. The certificate will be issued and delivered to your registered email address within 60 minutes (if there are no issues with your provided ID, etc.).

Are there additional steps once I receive my certification?

Some counties may require additional steps, including verification of exam completion with your local health agency. Additional administrative fees may apply. Check with your local health agency to find out more.

How long is my certification valid for?

Your Food Protection Manager certification is valid for 5 years from the date of issue. However, a few states have passed regulations that reduce this validity to 3 years, such as Maryland, Minnesota, Montana and Utah. Refer to your state's regulations to learn more.

Your certification status is not transferable to other people.

How do I verify the validity of a Food Protection Manager certificate issued by Userve?

Employers, health inspectors and other members of the public can request a Userve candidate’s certification status by contacting our support team and providing relevant candidate details (name, certificate number etc.).

Your certification status will be publicly available as required by the ANAB-CFP standard. However, your exam scores are confidential, available only to Userve, the Accrediting Organization and individuals or organizations approved in writing by you.
